For Pastors

It's much too common a comment.  One that we hear from pastors all over the world. And we hear it just about every day.  Chances are, you've said it yourself.

"They didn't teach me this in seminary."

As good--and as valuable--as a seminary education is, let's be clear.  Learning leadership is not usually a part of the curricula.   Theology?  Yes absolutely.  Preaching and counselling?  You bet!  Maybe there was even a class or two about how to run a meeting or teach a bible study...but honest-to-goodness, let's-cast-a-vision-and-head-toward-it leadership?   Not in most programs.

girl at forkSo what do you do when you prepare for a career in the church, only to find that a key skill set is missing or that the world has changed around you so that you need to learn a new skill set?  Well, you're at a fork in the road, with a choice to make:  do you continue doing what you've always done and hope for different results?  Or do you learn some new leadership skills?

Are you familiar with this crossroads?  Been there?  What did you do?  How did it work out?  Leading a congregation in a changing world is one of the more complicated challenges facing a leader today.  What choices do you make?  What skills do you need?  Heck, who can you talk to help make these hard choices and find these elusive skills?  It's easy to get frustrated and lose hope.

But don't.  Don't lose hope.

There is help available for navigating the complex leadership maze that faces pastors leading changing congregations in a changing world.   Have you considered what help a coach might be?  Or maybe what it might mean to learn a little about core leadership competencies?  Give us a call.  Or drop us an email.  We'd love to help you find a coach...or maybe help you get started coaching yourself.  There are plenty of training options available for you!  We'd love to help!
