How does a coaching movement work?
Because coaches are so central to resourcing for biblical mission, you'll need a lot of good quality coaches. You'll need to know clearly what you're trying to produce and you'll need to engage in intentional coach development. To capitalize on the vast potential of coaching and sustain that effectiveness in the long term, raising and multiplying coaches needs to become a priority. Every leader needs a coach... and every leaders needs to be coaching. Being proactive and intentional will allow you to increase your coaching capacity, allowing further growth and multiplication in all areas of ministry.
How does it work? A case study
Here's an example of how the CoachNet coach certification process was utilized in an organization:
Christian Outreach Centre - South Pacific
In 2001, COC introduced coaching as the foundational key to becoming a church multiplication movement. The goal was to multiply coaches throughout the COC movement so that there would be a coach available for each church planter, emerging leader, and pastor. The coaching training was adopted in conjunction with the training of emerging church planters, emerging leaders and church health (NCD).
Following this initial training of three coaches (senior movement leaders) by CoachNet South Pacific, 12 senior pastors were invited to be trained apprenticeship style by these three coaches. These candidates were selected on the basis of becoming multipliers of the coaching skills to others over time. These candidates have reproduced themselves and the process has gone through a number of cycles. COC now has established an ongoing coach development process overseen by a national coach network of leading coaches representing regions of Australia and New Zealand.
The network members are responsible for:
* Developing coaches in their regions using a standardized eight-month apprenticeship process based on the CoachNet certification process.
* Establishing networks for coaches in their region
* Monitoring coaching quality and ongoing development
* Ensuring coaching is integrated into every aspect of the regional strategies for the COC Church Multiplication Movement
The key learning so far is:
* Choice of the candidates is important. Those in an influential positional role do not necessarily adjust to embrace the coaching model.
* Training of coaches should target not only learning the skills but shifting thinking to become intuitively an empowerer of others.
* Promotion of the value of coaching by the organization's leaders is essential for candidates to persist through the training process.
In terms of numerical results, COC now has:
* National Coach Network members (supervise each region)
* Training coaches (train through apprenticeship)
* Learner coaches (currently in training)
* Trained coaches
