The original vision for CoachNet was to be a resource for church planters. Here it is, directly from Bob Logan, the founder:

The original vision for CoachNet came in 1977. I was a young, struggling church planter who very quickly came to the startling realization that I didn't have the slightest idea what I was doing. So I cried out to God for help--and as I prayed, I got a vision.

Thousands upon thousands of church planters were standing on the California seashore and God spoke in a loud voice: "Okay, everyone, listen up! Your objective--swim to Catalina Island. Line up, and start at my signal!"


Church planters jockeyed for position as the waves pounded at their feet. Then the starter's pistol fired. As they entered the water, some splashed and floundered. Some sank immediately. Most began to wade gingerly into the waves, with longing glances back at the shore. Only a few made it. Catalina lay shrouded in ocean mist some twenty-six miles away.

As church planter after church planter was pulled into the same undercurrent, making the same fatal mistakes over and over, I became very angry and began asking God questions.

"Why aren't there buoys to warn them of hazards to avoid during the swim? Why aren't there lifeboats to rescue those who are going under? Where are the church planters who have completed the swim successfully? Why aren't they returning to tell others how to do it?"

In the midst of my own pain and from the depths of my heart, I cried out to God…"Lord, this isn’t right. We're not learning from the successes or failures of others. You are the Builder of the Church. If you teach me how to swim-- and if you ever place me in the position to help the others lined up on the shore, that's what I want to do."
